Friday 7 October 2022
Businesses need to stay COOL in the face of complexity.
More Beyond Founder Sonja Blignut and complexity practitioner spoke on the first day of the International Federation of Compliance Association (IFCA) three-day conference addressing the relationship between complexity and compliance.
The core strength meta skills for businesses to meet an unpredictable skill can be explained under the acronym COOL:
Courage
Openness
Observing
Lightness
Blignut highlighted the difference complicatedness and the complexity, which are often used interchangeably.
The word ‘plic’ the root word of complicated it means enfolded, while the word complexity which comes from the word ‘plex’ means braided or entangled.
“So, the difference between a complicated and a complexed system are quite profound and the key thing here sis to understand that complexity arises from the interconnectivity between things and this why we have an experience now that the world is becoming increasing more complexed.”
The impact of the Covid-19 and the ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal that had such major ramifications on supply chains.
In order to effectively tackle complexity, it is important to look for flow of events rather than the things themselves.
“What is really important when we start to look at complexity is that we need to stop focusing so much on objects and on things, and the nature of things, and to start looking at how they are connected--how they interact. It is really a move away thingness and flow.”
For business to meet the complexed environment they need level of complexity fitness.
