Role Objective:
The aim of the role is to promote and improve the quality of advice amongst our financial advisers.

This position involves providing compliance services to the business in order to ensure regulatory requirements are met particularly in relation to the best interest obligations (best interest duty, appropriateness of advice and conflict priority rule).


Primarily you will:

  • support and supervise the advice activities of financial advisers;
  • identify, evaluate, report and manage compliance risks; and
  • provide guidance, training and leadership to advisers and staff supporting them in relation to the compliance requirements for financial advice

This is to be delivered in the form of pre-vetting, advice monitoring, audit reports, compliance meetings and Continuous Professional Development.

Key Accountabilities (major functions & activities in order of importance):

You will be responsible for enforcing the Dealer Group’s Advice policy and compliance standards. You are to continuously assess and monitor all representatives advice quality & knowledge. Through a hands on approach, you are empowered to resolve these gaps through development plans, appropriate intervention and will exercise thorough diligence when seeking to sanction, suspend or terminate representatives of the Dealer Group.

The Head of Compliance will deliver the following:

  • You will be conducting quality assurance checks on financial advice/planning files and documents (SOA’s, Fact Finds, ROA’s etc) focusing on the advisers and licensee meeting their regulatory obligations.
  • You will assist in promoting to advisers and assisting them to achieve the advice quality and documentation standards set by the Licensee.
  • You will proactively identify issues relating to advice and establish and provide detailed reports on the advice being provided.
  • Where issues are identified you will be required to develop and provide training to advisers to assist in closing the remediation loop.
  • You will play a critical role in identifying potential risks in the delivery of advice and report to your manager your findings from the monitoring and review process.

Specific tasks:
  • Update and manage our List of AFSL Controls
  • Review advice documents provided to clients
  • Implement the Adviser Competency Scorecard system designed internally and provide relevant reports on progress
  • Suggest enhancements to advice process or compliance processes in relation to identified issues based on outcomes of advice reviews
  • Liaise with stakeholders to identify existing or arising issues and opportunities
  • Communicate with internal staff and advisers on issues raised in file reviews
  • Liaise with other areas of the business to source information, where required
  • Report your findings to the Compliance Committee & Responsible Managers
  • Ensure tasks are completed in line with the policies and procedures for reviewing advice
  • Review all policies, professional standards and core business proofs annually
  • Assist with the implementation of any new compliance requirements as a result of changes in legislation or changes to the Licensee
  • Work with the external auditor to complete the annual audit
  • Work with the business to implement recommendations set out in any internal or external audit of the Licensee
  • Develop and maintain training and development plans for advisers and key stakeholders in line with industry and regulatory requirements. 
  • Provide advice in relation to the Company’s policies, procedures and document templates for AFSL purposes and AML/CTF purposes and update those policies, procedures and templates as directed by the Company.
  • Collaborate with, and where necessary, supervise other responsible mangers and provide supervision and assistance for other personnel of the Company as directed by the Company.
  • Perform other duties, activities and functions as the Head of Compliance as required.
AFSL management:
  • Drive the development of Advice polices and participate in projects to improve advice

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
  • Significant demonstrable experience across all facets of compliance & AFSL Governance.
  • Superior knowledge and experience of the financial planning industry including demonstrated knowledge of compliance requirements within the financial planning and mortgage broking industries.
  • Satisfactory completion RG 146 training
  • Cert IV or Grad Diploma Compliance and Risk Management or equivalent
  • Degree qualified in Business/Finance or related discipline
  • Diploma Financial Planning or Advanced Diploma Financial Planning (Recommended)
  • FASEA Education requirements met and satisfactory pass on Advisor Exam
  • Strong experience with Practice Management or proven experience in the Financial Planning industry with a demonstrable understanding of the advice process
  • High level experience with XPlan & Microsoft Office applications
