2023 - Special General Meeting Invitation
Who we are:
A Special General has been called by Directors on the GRC Institute Board to propose a change of name for the Institute. As Directors and representatives of the membership and the compliance profession we feel this change of name at this time is key to moving our activities forward on your behalf.
The mission of the Institute is to ensure that all organisations have access to suitably qualified compliance risk managers. We achieve this by providing professional skills development, networking opportunities, thought leadership and nationally accredited workplace qualifications.
Our focus has always been on developing the compliance profession and compliance professionals. We are the only professional body in Australia dedicated to this outcome. The board and management believe our brand should clearly align with this focus.
What we propose:
The proposal is to change the name of the Institute from the GRC Institute to the Australian Compliance Institute. Long time members will recall that we have previously adopted this name. This will not alter the fundamental mission and offerings of the Institute.
Why the change:
Having been in the compliance profession for some time, Directors have observed many cycles and evolutions in regard to how the compliance function is understood and valued by the businesses our members work for.
The change at this time is felt to be necessary to refocus and refine the perception of the compliance profession. Just as it was necessary previously, when we changed our name to the GRC Institute, to send a message about compliance, risk and governance working together strategically without hierarchy, it is felt that now is also the time to distinguish singularly compliance once again and to:
-
Address confusion in the market and the still immature understanding about the role of the compliance professional and their value proposition.
-
Refocus and emphasise the integral work of the compliance function and its distinct offerings in the risk and governance matrix.
-
Correct the idea that risk, compliance and governance are ‘all the same thing basically’.
-
Highlight the compliance profession and its contribution to business strategy, objectives, trust, culture and integrity.
The renaming of the GRC Institute to the Australian Compliance Institute, reinforces our leadership in the compliance profession. We will continue to:
-
provide training and support on risk management, as this is a fundamental skill in the compliance toolkit;
-
deliver qualifications that focus on compliance and risk management;
-
facilitate working groups that cover a range of topics that embrace compliance, risk, and governance content; and
-
engage with Australian regulators on the value proposition of the compliance profession.
Our focus will be on Australian issues and how that can also benefit our colleagues in the Asia Pacific region and more broadly.
What do you need to do:
If you would like to engage in promoting your profession you can:
-
Reach out to one of the GRC Institute Directors and discuss one on one
-

-
Help push forward our communications and promotion of the profession actively in your roles and networks
What this means for our members:
While the name change will not impact the breadth and quality of our services, it will help the Institute better represent you – to employers, other professional bodies, government, and regulators. The name Australian Compliance Institute, clearly tells others who we are and what we represent. It is targeted and focused. Just as we have always been in our delivery of services to you.
The name change is an important step in the ongoing development of the Institute. We hope you are as excited as the board and management are about the ongoing improvements we are making to the Institute and look forward to continuing to support you in your compliance career.
